Ploughman's Single Malt Canadian Whisky

A single malt that cuts its own path, for those who write their own history. Ploughman's brings together two farming traditions thousands of kilometres apart: generations of Pedro Ximénez winemaking in Jerez, Spain, and our single malt from the Alberta foothills.

The Casks

These casks weren't picked from a catalogue. Our Master Distiller, Daniel Gowrie, travelled to Jerez and visited bodegas in person to find casks with a history he could stand behind. He found them at Ximénez-Spínola, a family-owned bodega dating back to 1729 and now run by the ninth generation. They make wine only from the Pedro Ximénez grape.

Our casks come straight from the bodega's working solera, some of which date back to 1918. These casks spent their lives making wine, not being seasoned for whisky, and we hold the exclusive Canadian rights to them.

The Foothills

Back home, Ploughman's starts with 100% Alberta malted barley and glacial water from the Sheep River. It matures in ex-bourbon and new European oak in Alberta's only traditional dunnage-style warehouse, more than 4,000 feet above sea level. Chinook winds and sharp temperature swings push the whisky deep into the wood and back out again. It then rests for a minimum of six months in the Ximénez-Spínola casks, taking on dark chocolate, espresso and dates.

The Bottle

Non-chill filtered, with no added colour, and bottled at 46% alc./vol. Rich and decadent, it unfolds in layers and ends with a long, lingering sweetness.

From Farm to Glass

Every one of our small batch whiskies is produced using barley we grow and harvest ourselves. Unlike most distilleries, we raise our whisky from seed and see it through to round, complex and balanced drops.
